Second Chance Cinema and the Black Box present a season of films from Northern Ireland made during and/or about the Troubles. We want to showcase some of the weird, wonderful and insightful films made from the 60s to the 90s that shed some light on complicated times.

Sunday 29th July — 25 Bloody Years (1994)
3pm // Black Box Green Room // £4
25 Bloody Years was a series of made-for-television documentaries produced by the BBC in 1994 to commemorate 25 years of the Troubles. We have selected several episodes to screen including The Dead, an hour-long episode focusing on individuals who died in the conflict. While it is a very sad and often difficult watch, it’s an artfully made film, reminiscent of World War Two documentaries like ’The Sorrow and the Pity’.

We will also be screening three shorter episodes of the series that are more lighthearted, focusing on some of the unintended consequences of the conflict, and the day-to-day life of Northern Irish citizens during those times.

Monday 27th August — Hidden Agenda, Dir. Ken Loach (1990)
7.30pm // Black Box Main Room // £5/3
A political thriller about British state terrorism during the Troubles, one of the first films to deal directly with collusion in Northern Ireland.

Sunday 30th September — Dancing on Narrow Ground, Dir. Des Bell (1995)
3pm // Black Box Green Room // £4
A documentary investigating the non-sectarian Northern Irish rave culture of the 1990s. Des Bell will provide an introduction.

Sunday 28th October — The Patriot Game, Dir. Arthur McCaig (1981)
3pm // Black Box Green Room // £4
US documentary-maker McCaig’s forensic study of the troubles and the IRA. Introduction by Belfast filmmaker and academic Sean Murray.

Sunday 18th November — Time and Place
3pm // Black Box Green Room // £4
Archive films about specific times and places, including Derry~Londonderry in the early 1960s and the Markets in the 1970s.

Sunday 20th January — Northern Irish Poet Films
3pm // Black Box Green Room // £4
Films made by, and about, NI poets — including Seamus Heaney and Damien Gorman.

Sunday 24th February — The Crying Game, Dir Neil Jordan (1992)
3pm // Black Box Main Room // £5/3
Oscar-winning classic exploring ideas of race, gender, nationality, and sexuality against the backdrop of the Troubles.
